BERT’S FISH AND CHIP SHOP
Bert's Fish and Chip Shop, located on East Street in Bermondsey, was the place where my father lived and grew up during the 1960s and 1970s, until he was approximately 10 years old. Growing up, I frequently heard stories about the shop from my dad and nan. As a child, I found it amusing to imagine living above the place similar to where we bought our Friday night takeaways.
This piece aims to capture the essence of 1970s London, depicting the era and the sense of community surrounding the shop. As Cockney culture gradually fades and the neighborhoods where my family resided undergo change, it becomes increasingly important to preserve these stories. They are integral to understanding my family's identity, and I wish to honor their lives through this piece.
